Jeju tax refunds allow eligible foreign tourists to claim back domestic taxes on goods bought at tax-refund shops and taken out of Korea. Know the difference between an instant refund at checkout and a refund on departure. Leaving Jeju on a domestic flight does not count as leaving Korea.
Eligibility and Purchase Requirements
You must meet the legal requirements for non-resident status. Foreign nationals who have stayed in Korea for 6 months or longer are not eligible. Each transaction at a tax-refund shop must total at least 15,000 won. Goods must be unopened and unused, and taken out of Korea within 3 months of purchase.
Instant Refunds and Refunds After Purchase
For an instant refund, each transaction must be less than 1 million won including tax, and the total value of purchases eligible for instant refunds since entry must not exceed 5 million won. A purchase of exactly 1 million won is not eligible for an instant refund. Advance refunds at downtown locations are available for transactions of up to 6 million won, subject to security requirements. There is no upper purchase limit for refunds at airports or seaports on departure.
What to Bring and Departure Procedures from Jeju
Prepare your passport, boarding pass, tax refund slip or certificate of sale, and purchased goods. A regular receipt or card payment slip alone is not sufficient for a refund. Do not check in goods that require customs inspection before they have been inspected. If you take a domestic flight before leaving Korea, complete the export verification and refund procedures at the airport where you actually depart Korea. For baggage checked through to your final destination, ask your airline when to present the goods for inspection.
Actual Refund Amount
Refund fees may be deducted, so you will not necessarily receive a fixed percentage of the purchase price or the full amount of VAT. Check the estimated amount and payment method on your tax refund slip.
