Sea & Coast
Sagye Coast & Yongmeori Coast
Full narration
Sagye Coast and Yongmeori Coast stretch along the foot of Sanbangsan Mountain. Yongmeori, meaning “dragon’s head,” takes its name from its resemblance to a dragon raising its head and entering the sea. About a million years ago, underwater volcanic activity deposited layers of ash here. Over time, waves wore them away, creating distinctive rock formations like the pages of a book stacked together. Fossilized human and animal footprints were discovered along the neighboring coast of Sagye-ri, and are protected as a Natural Monument. Access to the coastal walking trail may be restricted depending on the tides and waves. Nearby, an exhibition hall commemorates Hamel, a Dutchman who was shipwrecked on Jeju during the Joseon period. Take in the scenery, where the massive Sanbangsan Mountain meets the sea.
